The Reedbank, the far shore, the Slip, the Lane and the Quay as plan.ts, slip.ts, lane.ts and quay.ts stand them, to scale, and the five districts it grows into. Drawn from the tables the game reads.
North is up; the grid is 1 m. The pale rectangles are where she can walk: her bank, the far shore, north-east over the water the Glassmakers' Slip, north of the Slip Clockwork Lane, and north-east of the Lane Silver Quay. The places are what a body goes round, the rings are their pads at reach (0.85 m), and the tick points to the face each is worked from. Past the edge stand the scenery and the gate the obscura show opens; past the Slip's north end, its gate, which the phantasmagoria room's show opens; past the Lane's north end, its gate, which the praxinoscope theatre's show opens; west of the Quay the racetrack, north of it the long quay, and past its east end its gate, which the zoopraxiscope gallery's show opens, with the Arcade beyond. The dashed rings are laid once the heron has worn thin: the ferry's at the jetty and on the far shore, and the pads of the places she works there; the hiring pad beside the jetty's, once she has a helper's price; the causeway's two and the Slip's, once the gate is open; the path's two and the Lane's, once the Slip's gate is; and the steps' two and the Quay's, once the Lane's gate is. The dashed lines are the causeway, from the end of the east track through the gate to the Slip, the path, from the Slip through its gate up to the Lane, and the steps, from the Lane through its gate on to the Quay. The dotted loop is the hired hand's round.
Each shore is cut into districts, named in large type. Green blocks are hills and copses (land.ts): they stop a body and part one district from the next. The pale bands are roads worn between districts. The small squares are the districts' pennants, and each signpost's boards point to a district in its flag colour.
One continuous map. Each district opens off the one before it when its gate show is staged with enough wonder; none closes. The arcs are what a later district draws from an earlier one.
