Wide streets, kerbed blocks of four-storey fronts, orange bins and Spätis and locked bicycles, a courtyard behind every passage, and a double row of setts down the one street where the Wall came through. You wake on one crossing of it with the roads fenced off at both ends of every arm, and the bottles somebody left standing on the walls are the only two things you have: eight cents each at the Pfandautomat, or three of them to put down whatever is coming up the street. Getting out costs money. The money is on the pavement.
